Beginning June 1, 2006 the Bexar County HIV Ryan White Program will officially move from Bexar County management to the Alamo Area Council of Governments, approved by County Commissioner's Court on May 23, 2006. The management of the Ryan White Program was best thought to rest with AACOG because of their affiliations with the Council of Governments that provide services to the same counties in the Health Services Delivery Areas. The Ryan White Care Act was established in 1990 and is reauthorized by Congress every five years. The HIV Ryan White Program has been administering federal and state grants since 1997 and funds from these grants are used to provide medical and support services to persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The program has contracts with subcontractors that provide these services throughout South Texas. The Ryan White program has subcontractors who provide services to clients who reside in Bexar County and the three surrounding counties; Wilson, Guadalupe and Comal. The Program also has contracts with subcontractors who provide services to clients who reside in the Corpus Christi Health Service Delivery Area (HSDA), Uvalde HSDA and the Victoria HSDA.
"The Crucible" is a one week scenario based training
exercise for our senior cadets. We have currently developed five
scenarios which test both knowledge and tactical skills in burglary
investigations, domestic violence offenses, and traffic stops. The
cadets receive a "call" in which they must respond to.
To find out more about AACOG's Regional Law Enforcement Academy or see the academy schedule for May through August 2006, click here or call (210) 362-5291. AACOG offers a workshop for planning commissioners, elected officials, and staff. This workshop is sponsored by the Texas Chapter American Planning Association in cooperation with the City Planners Association of Texas, the Texas Association of Regional Councils, and AACOG. The next workshop will be held June 22, 2006 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the AACOG Board Room, 8700 Tesoro Drive, Suite 100. To find out about topics to be covered in this workshop, or to register, click here or call (210) 362-5212. AACOG will have its Semiannual Meeting of the Area Council and Board of Directors on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in the AACOG Board Room, 8700 Tesoro Drive, Suite 100, San Antonio, TX. AACOG will announce the winners of the 2006 AACOG Regional Awards at a special ceremony and reception following the meeting at approximately 2:00 p.m. In response to a challenge by City of San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger, local organizations are promoting better transportation and air quality by encouraging employees to log their smart miles during the month of June. Smart miles include walking, cycling, busing, and car/vanpooling to and from work. Smart miles decrease traffic congestion as well as ozone pollution. The organization with the best record at the end of June will receive the Walk & Roll Commuters Challenge Cup. The Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge, coordinated by AACOG and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), challenges employers of the 12-county region (Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Wilson) to encourage employees to Get Up and Go! As the cost to refuel vehicles rises, so too does the need to find alternative means of transportation. The Challenge not only encourages a healthier lifestyle for the region, it also saves money. Choosing to walk to lunch instead of drive provides exercise and keeps fuel money in pockets. To find out more about the Corporate Challenge, please visit www.walkandrollchallenge.com or call (210) 362-5246.
H-E-B will begin to sell E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) at five gasoline retail sites along the Interstate 35 Corridor by the end of August 2006 and one of the stations will be at the H-E-B store off of FM 3009 and Interstate 35 North. E85 is a domestically produced, cleaner burning fuel that releases approximately 15% less volatile organic compounds and 10% less nitrogen oxides than conventional gasoline. H-E-B has been an active participant in various committees at AACOG. H-E-B sits on the Air Improvement Resources Advisory Committee, has been a stakeholder in the Alamo Area Clean Cities Coalition, and became the charter member of the Alamo Clean Air Partnership. This recent announcement is yet another example of H-E-B’s commitment to environmental stewardship and to providing the best services available to its consumers.
