The Center for Health Care Services is passing the baton as the Mental Retardation Authority of Bexar County to AACOG effective September 1, 2006, as it becomes known as the Bexar Mental Retardation Authority (MRA).  The MRA will be responsible for providing development, implementation, and expansion of a comprehensive plan for services to children and adults with mental retardation in Bexar County.  Presently there are approximately 40,000 persons in Bexar County with some degree of mental retardation, 25,000 persons in Texas on the waiting list for services, and 2,500 on the waiting list for services in Bexar County.

The Bexar MRA will be located on the eighth floor of 8700 Tesoro Drive, and will move-in the middle to latter part of September.  Approximately fifty employees will transfer from the Center for Health Care Services to AACOG and become AACOG employees.  We will celebrate this change, the new ownership of the program, and the MRA's new location with an Open House in October for families and providers.

A comprehensive "Focus Group" orientation of the Resources and Mission of the Bexar County Assisted Living Task Force will be held on Monday, September 18, 2006, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the City of San Antonio Development Services Building, Training Room B, 1901 S. Alamo, San Antonio, TX 78204.  To find out more, click here.

The AACOG Regional Review Committee (RRC) has recently released the Applicant Guidelines for the 2007 and 2008 program years. The Guidelines were adopted by the RRC at their organizational meeting on June 7, 2006 and approved by the Office of Rural Community Affairs (ORCA) staff on July 14, 2006.  These Guidelines were established by the RRC according to their responsibilities under the 2007-2008 Texas Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The Guidelines assist applicants from the AACOG region in understanding the scoring criteria used to determine the regional scores for applications submitted for the Community Development Block Grant Fund competition.

The application deadline for the 2007- 2008 TXCDBGP has been extended to September 29, 2006. The completed applications should be delivered to the ORCA office by this date. Additionally, copies of the applications are due at the AACOG RRC by October 20, 2006. For more information regarding this extension, visit www.orca.state.tx.us.  For information regarding the AACOG RRC contact Joe Ramos, Government Services Manager at jramos@aacog.com or (210) 362-5212.

AACOG Homeland Security (HS) Department is gearing up for our Regional WMD Functional Exercise in October. The region recently held an exercise planning meeting at the Alamodome where key stakeholders in the region came together and submitted their ideas and requirements for the development of the exercise scenario. Leading up to the event, AACOG HS will be hosting several training courses for regional participants. We will be hosting a Public Information Officer Course, a Senior Officials Workshop, an Incident Command System Training and two tabletop exercises, with the Functional Exercise being held October 10-12.

AACOG HS has also received eight prime mover trucks that were purchased with FY 2005 Homeland Security Funding. These trucks will be distributed throughout the region and will be available for mutual aid.  Click here to read Leon Valley Fire Department's press release regarding their receipt of their Prime Mover.

More than 600 laboratory designers and engineers will come together for the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21) 2006 Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. This one-of-a-kind event will be held October 17-19, 2006, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.  To find out more about this conference, please click here.

2005 Charlie class began crucible training on August 28, 2006.  Crucible is a weeklong scenario-based, evaluation of each cadet’s knowledge and application of the practical skills they have acquired during their year of Academy training.  After completion of the Crucible, the 2005 Charlie class will begin preparations for their state examinations scheduled in September.  Graduation for Charlie class will be on September 29, 2006, at 7:00 p.m., at UTSA.

The incoming 2006 Charlie class begins October 9, 2006.  The Academy will administer entrance evaluations throughout September.

The Distance Learning program is finally underway.  The first class is scheduled for September 14, 2006, for Crisis Intervention Training, a mental health course mandated by the state for all peace officers.  We will hold the ribbon cutting ceremony in November.

The San Antonio economy continued to generate jobs at a healthy rate in the second quarter of 2006. Total Nonfarm payrolls expanded by 13,933 jobs during (1.78 percent) the period as a broad sample of industry sectors experienced upturns in employment. The Leisure & Hospitality sector led the expansion, adding 6,700 jobs during the Quarter as area businesses ramped up for the busy summer season. Complementing this seasonal shift, a continuingly expansive economy continued to generate strong demand within the Professional & Business Services sector and the Construction & Manufacturing sector spurring strong job growth.  Click here to read this entire article in latest edition of the Alamo WorkSource E-NewsSource.
