At the December 2006 semi-annual meeting of the AACOG Area Council and Board of Directors, the board elected City of Windcrest Mayor Jack Leonhardt as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. There will be a celebration honoring Mr. Notzon’s years of service on Sunday, January 28, 2007. Senator John Cornyn is the honorary chairman of the Al J. Notzon Celebration Committee. The committee has established the Al J. Notzon Scholarship Fund in his honor. To find out more information about the celebration or the scholarship fund, please send an e-mail to mail@aacog.com. The Office of Rural Community Affairs (ORCA) is responsible for administering the State of Texas Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. This is a competitive statewide grant program. A State Review Committee at ORCA and an AACOG Regional Review Committee (RRC) independently review and score all applications submitted in the AACOG Region. The combined scores of these two review committees determine the overall score assigned to each application submitted. The final assigned score is used to determine whether a grant application is funded in this funding cycle. The AACOG RRC is made up of 12 members from the AACOG Region, each appointed by the Governor to a two-year staggered term. The current Chairperson of the AACOG RRC is Kerr County Judge Pat Tinley. The RRC held its first meeting in June 2006 when it conducted its 2007-2008 funding cycle organizational meeting. At this meeting the RRC established regional priorities and scoring criteria for project priorities, project merits and local efforts. The deadline for submitting applications to ORCA for this funding cycle was September 21, 2006, and for submitting copies of the applications to the AACOG RRC was October 20, 2006. AACOG staff is currently reviewing and tabulating the 25 applications submitted in preparation for the RRC scoring meeting. The AACOG RRC scoring meeting is scheduled for January 9, 2007 in the AACOG Boardroom. Interpersonal Communications in the Correctional Setting This two-day course which is a requirement for
intermediate Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and
Education (TCLEOSE) certification, will provide an opportunity for
participants to try out new ways of handling inmates, reconstructing
their attitudes and contributing to an eventual successful adjustment in
the institution and on the street. Since 97% of our daily contact time
is spent talking to people, the need to learn good communications skills
is vital. These skills will also help in getting compliance without
escalation to the use of force. By learning these skills you will also
increase safety, decrease complaints and liability, enhance
professionalism, and lower stress levels. This course identifies common
problem situations and gives practical solutions.

The New Judges Orientation is a great opportunity for newly-elected judges to meet their peers and other professionals in judicial education. New judges will become acquainted with and proficient in conducting trials and other courtroom procedures along with managing court dockets, handling court records, maintaining decorum in the courtroom, and deciding family violence cases.
Mr. Jonson recently reflected on his volunteer experience. “After moving to San Antonio, I became aware of AACOG and Area Agencies on Aging as a result of an outreach for volunteers listed in the local newspaper in the summer of 2005," said Mr. Jonson. "The request related specifically to the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program. I knew something about the Program due to the increasing media publicity. After attending the first couple of training meetings I knew working with the program would be challenging but fun! I’ve always enjoyed details and numbers and the Part D Program certainly involves both!" Several new items are now
available on the AACOG website. The 2006 AACOG Annual Report, now
available
online, describes recent
accomplishments of all AACOG programs, as well as the 2006 and 2007
Budgets. The Alamo Area Law Enforcement Academy recently posted
its new
in-service course schedules for January through April 2007. Also, |
