On Sunday, January 28, 2007, a celebration of Al J. Notzon's 40 years of service with AACOG was held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.  He left AACOG effective January 31, 2007.  Mr. Notzon began working with AACOG in 1967 as the regional services director, and became Executive Director in 1971.

The event was attended by more than 500 individuals, including family members, public officials, members of the clergy, business colleagues, AACOG staff, and friends.  Henry Cisneros was the Master of Ceremonies, and other speakers included City of San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and City of Windcrest Mayor Jack H. Leonhardt.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn was the honorary chairman, and a committee representing many organizations planned this event and established the Al J. Notzon Scholarship in his honor.  For more information about the scholarship fund, contact the council at (210) 362-5200 or mail@aacog.com

The AACOG Board of Directors also renamed the AACOG Board Room to the Al J. Notzon III Board Room in honor of his years of dedicated service to the Alamo region.  There was a dedication ceremony of the Board Room on January 31, 2007, with a blessing by Father John Waiss.  The Bexar County Commissioners Court passed a resolution recognizing January 31, 2007 as "Al J. Notzon III Day" in Bexar County.

AACOG is very pleased to announce our new Executive Director, Gloria C. Arriaga, effective February 1, 2007.  Mrs. Arriaga has been with AACOG since 1971, working since 1999 as the Deputy Executive Director, overseeing various departments including Administration, Workforce, Housing, the Area Agencies on Aging, HIV Administrative Services, and the Bexar Mental Retardation Authority.

"After an extensive search with many fine applicants, a comparison of qualities and experiences identified Gloria as a superb individual to take over the leadership and to move the Alamo Area Council of Governments forward," Windcrest Mayor Jack H. Leonhardt, Chairman AACOG Board of Directors, said.  "The Board is very excited about Gloria Arriaga's demonstrated skills leading the organization in providing efficient and effective services to residents within the AACOG area."

Ms. Arriaga received her Bachelor's in Business Administration from UTSA in 1982, and her Master's Degree in Urban Administration from Trinity University in 1994.  She is a graduate of Leadership San Antonio and served as President of the Urban Management Assistants of South Texas.  For more information, call AACOG Community Relations at (210) 362-5204 or e-mail mail@aacog.com.

Local aging organizations throughout the region including the City of San Antonio, the Alamo Area Council of Governments Bexar and Alamo Area Agencies on Aging and the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature are participating in Senior Day at the Capitol 2007. This biennial event will be held on February 13, 2007 in Austin beginning at 10:30 am.

Senior Day is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions older adults have made and will continue to make to the state of Texas. It is also an opportunity for seniors to demonstrate their interest in issues that affect them. The keynote speaker for the event will be Bob Lilly, former Dallas Cowboy and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with additional speeches by numerous state elected officials. There will also be displays on healthy living and aging, opportunities for a self-guided tour of the Capitol, and a chance for seniors to visit their elected officials. The theme for the day is "Seniors–the Heart of Texas."

Senior Day at the Capitol is held when the Texas Legislature is in session, once every two years.  For more information about the Senior Day at the Capitol, e-mail bhyde@aacog.com or call (210) 362-5220.

The Alamo Clean Air Partnership (ACAP) encourages everyone to Take Out Air Pollution in 2007. Simple steps can make a big difference; you can take out air pollution by turning off lights when not in use, driving less, or maintaining your vehicle. Log onto the online takeout menu at www.cleanairdrive.com to identify and select the steps you want to take to reduce air pollution.

After you place your takeout order, ACAP staff will contact you to help you accomplish your goals.

Air pollution affects everyone, even healthy individuals. But air pollution is particularly harmful to sensitive groups: children, the elderly, people who are active outdoors, and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma.

The negative impacts of air pollution don’t end with human health; dirty skies can also be detrimental to plants and pose other environmental hazards. If air pollution levels are bad enough in the summer of 2007, our region will be in violation of federal air pollution standards, which could impact economic growth in the San Antonio area.

For more information, contact Brenda Williams at (210) 362-5246 or visit www.cleanairdrive.com.
