AACOG will host a Public Funds Investment Act Training and a Cash Handling Seminar in August.  These training opportunities are sponsored by the Government Treasurers' Organization of Texas and the University of North Texas Center for Public Management.

The Public Funds Investment Act training will be held August 28-29, 2006.  New Investment Officers of local governments are required to receive 10 hours of this training within the first 12 months after taking office or assuming duties.  For state agencies and institutions of higher education, Investment Officers are required to attend one training session every two years, and new officers must attend the training within 6 months after taking office or assuming duties.  The training includes education in investment controls, security risks, strategy risks, market risks, diversification of investment portfolio, and compliance with the Public Funds Investment Act.  To view the curriculum, click here.

The Cash Handling Seminar will be held in the AACOG Board Room on August 30, 2006.  The seminar will provide a comprehensive guide for training government employees in proper cash handling techniques.  Topics included are currency and check recognition, daily cash operations, and security procedures/loss prevention.

Local leaders in the San Antonio area are working together to clean up our air. Air pollution is a regional concern, affects the health of citizens, and can impact economic growth.

In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency will analyze ozone data recorded in the San Antonio area during 2005, 2006, and 2007. This analysis will determine whether we are in attainment of federal air quality standards.

In baseball, three strikes and you’re out. The same is true for our air quality. Currently we have two strikes against us. Our 2005 value that the EPA will average to determine our attainment status is above the threshold allowed by federal standards Strike One. According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, our 2006 value is also above the threshold Strike Two.  Violating air quality standards could bring consequences, such as increased regulations for new and existing businesses that want to expand their operations.

Most locally-generated air pollution comes from the vehicles we drive, something we can control every day. Every citizen in the region can take action to improve the situation by driving less.  Driving less will help our region drive toward a cleaner future.  To learn more, visit www.aacog.com/air.

AACOG has been selected to receive a National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Innovation Award.  AACOG's Bexar Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program is receiving the award for its facilitation of the Bexar County Assisted Living Task Force.  Winning projects will be announced at the NADO Conference in Reno/Sparks Nevada on August 28, 2006, and in the NADO News and highlighted in NADO publications.  To read more, click here.

There are 25 Area Information Centers in Texas that collect and maintain data on local resources and provide information and referrals to callers looking for help.  The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County serves as the Area Information Center for the AACOG region, providing information and referrals to health and human care services.  For more than three years, people have been able to access this service by dialing 2-1-1.  United Way 2-1-1 maintains a comprehensive database of health and human care service information, which includes information on 761 public and private agencies with 4,636 programs.   United Way staff, interns and volunteers staff the
2-1-1 call center.

Consumers, social workers, human resource managers and other professionals have access to the United Way 2-1-1 database via www.unitedwaysatx.org (click on "Information and referral database").  Service searches can be done by key words, agency name and geographic location.  The database produces maps and can provide a Spanish translation of an agency’s services.  United Way also publishes a printed version of the database called “Community Assistance Directory” (or the Blue Book) every two years.  The 24th edition (July 2005) is currently on sale.  For anyone who may need to look for services outside the AACOG region, a new website www.211texas.org is available (it is expected to be fully functional by the end of summer).  This website will include information from the more than 6,000 agency databases of the 25 Area Information Centers.

The San Antonio area reduced 800 lbs. of air pollution last month by participating in the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge and logging over 200,000 alternative commute miles.  The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) led the Challenge by accruing 36 miles per employee, making them the recipient of the 2006 Commuter Challenge Cup.  To read the press release about the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge, click here.

AACOG's Regional Youth Criminal Justice Education Program will host a Gang Awareness training in the AACOG Board Room, 8700 Tesoro Drive, Suite 100, San Antonio, on August 3, 2006.  Topics to be covered in this free training include an Introduction to Gangs, Information on Local San Antonio Gangs, and Gang-Related Behavior.  The instructor will be Chris Benavides with the SAPD.  Contact vavalos@aacog.com for more information.

On January 30, 2006 the Federal Transit Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation released a request for proposal to 30 counties in Texas for a Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) grant.  Frio County was one of the 30 counties eligible to apply.  I-H 35 Corridor President Diana De Los Santos, County Judge Carlos Garcia and Workforce Center Manager Jane Hibdon, have been meeting with individuals throughout Frio and the surrounding counties for the past year to determine the scope of the transportation needs; hoping to find assistance for our residents who need transportation to work and training activities. With assistance, coordination and support from Frio County, Community Council of Southwest Texas, AACOG and other concerned organizations, Frio was one of five counties selected to receive funds.  Frio County is scheduled to receive $309,780.  Funds will be available beginning in September 2006 through August 2008.

These funds will provide trips for community members to work and school, thus enhancing their quality of life and providing economic benefits to Frio County.  We are currently coordinating with public transportation in surrounding areas including San Antonio to make this transportation opportunity useful to all of our residents.  Meetings will continue to be held to determine routes and finalize the needs of the community.  If you are interested in being part of these planning meetings, contact Fabian Villalobos at the Alamo WorkSource Career Center in Pearsall at (830) 334-4464.
