Retired Texas Ranger H. Joaquin Jackson to speak at Class 2004-Charlie Academy Graduation

Go to webpage

Law Enforcement Academy Class 2004-Charlie will hold its graduation ceremony on September 30, 2005, at 7:00 p.m., in the UTSA Business Building, 6900 North Loop 1604 West.  Approximately 20 cadets will be graduating.

The keynote speaker for the ceremony will be H. Joaquin Jackson, who retired from the Texas Rangers in 1993, ending a career that began in 1966 when he served with distinction as a Texas Ranger from the Hill Country to the Big Bend.  He has pursued criminals on horseback, vehicle, and on foot on both sides of the Rio Grande.  Joaquin took part in the prison riot shoot out at Carrizo Springs, the horrific homicide case in Big Bend's Colorado Canyon, and many other high profile investigations.  He was the role model for actor Nick Nolte's movie "Extreme Prejudice", and appeared in other movies such as "Gold Old Boys" (based on the novel by Elmer Kelton), and starred Tommy Lee Jones.  His memoir "One Ranger" is the biggest seller in the history of University of Texas Press.  He currently lives in Alpine, Texas, and is a frequent speaker on topics of Texas Ranger Lore and Texas Law Enforcement.

SchoolPool is Back in Session

Go to webpage

SchoolPool Matching Form
Vacation is definitely over in the Alamo City.  As students find themselves back behind a desk for hours a day, parents and commuters are finding themselves back in what seems like hours of extra traffic.  Each year when school goes back into session, many parents find that they now have two commutes:  the first driving their child to school and the second driving themselves to work.  It’s stressful for the parents, for other commuters sharing the road, and for the environment.

The additional traffic couldn’t come at a worse time.  As the dog days of summer roll on in late August and September, summer heat combines with extra pollution emitted by the vehicles sitting in traffic to make ground-level ozone, an invisible but very harmful air pollutant.  Exposure to ground-level ozone causes symptoms ranging from headaches and nausea to shortness of breath long-term lung damage.  The effects of ground-level ozone are most profound on active children and those already suffering from lung diseases such as asthma.

Fortunately, the Alamo Area Council of Governments is able to announce it’s 2005-2006 SchoolPool program, which will help relieve parents and commuters, and help safeguard students.

Go to webpage

To prove to the Alamo Region that we can get around town using alternative modes of transportation, we are challenging citizens to log a total of 500,000 miles during the month of October. Commute miles, recreation miles, training miles, errands-they all count. Every time you utilize an alternative mode of transportation that is in one of the competition categories, you can log your miles using the event website. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each of the competition categories.
