AACOG seeking applications for the
2005 Regional Awards

AACOG is now accepting nominations for the 2005 Regional Awards. Recipients will be honored at a special ceremony on June 22, 2005. Any person, corporation, community project, or governmental regional project that has contributed to the significant positive advancement of the region and/or communities in the twelve counties of the Alamo Area (Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Wilson Counties) is eligible for nomination.  Current elected officials and public sector employees are not eligible for nomination, unless involved in a governmental regional project. Nominations are due Monday, May 2, 2005.

AACOG welcomes The Grantsmanship Center Training (TGCI) to San Antonio

AACOG is pleased to welcome “The Grantsmanship Center Training” (TGCI) to San Antonio.  AACOG staff that have attended the seminar see a significant increase in the number of successful grant proposals. This effective five-day course will be held March 28, 2005 thru April 1, 2005, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The workshop will take place at the AACOG Board Room, located at 8700 Tesoro Drive, Suite 100, San Antonio, Texas 78217.

Symposium on Health Care Staffing Crisis

A Long Term Care Staffing Crisis Symposium is scheduled for February 24, 2005, at St. Paul’s Community Center, 1201 Donaldson, San Antonio, Texas 78228 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This symposium is being offered at no cost to participants, and lunch will be sponsored.  The purpose of this symposium is to discuss issues that contribute to Long Term Care Staffing Shortages, to be followed by a printed Symposium Report, which will be integrated into the Bexar Area Agency on Aging Long Term Care Services Committee Strategic Plan to address the Health Care Staffing Crisis.  Call (210) 362-5236 for more information.

TEEX conducts Senior Officials Workshop for WMD and Terrorism Incident Preparedness

In conjunction with the upcoming Multi-Jurisdictional Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)/Hazmat Exercises, the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) will provide a Senior Officials Workshop (SOW) for WMD and Terrorism Incident Preparedness on February 17, 2005 (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at the Airport Conference Room, San Antonio Fire Station 23, 1750 Skyplace Blvd, San Antonio, Texas, 78216.  Call Scott Lampright with Bexar County Emergency Management at (210) 335-0300 for more information.

Bexar County Seniors largest delegation to attend Senior Day at the Capitol 2005

As many as 1,000 seniors from Bexar County will participate in Senior Day at the Capitol in Austin on February 8, 2005.  This group will be the largest delegation in Texas attending the event.  A total of 4,000 seniors from around Texas are expected to attend.  Seniors will participate in a ceremony on the South Steps of the Capitol and have the opportunity to meet with elected officials from Bexar County and to discuss issues affecting older Texans.

You are invited to this nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.   Learn how to plant and nurture a tree!

San Antonio’s 2nd Annual Arbor Day will be held:
February 5, 2005 at the
Sonny Melendrez Community Center
located at 5919 W. Commerce from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Bring your whole family and take a course on how to plant and maintain a tree.  FREE TREES will be given to everyone who takes this short course to increase the chance of your tree’s survival and well being.   There will be many other fun activities: educational booths, giveaways, and refresments!
