Mow Down Smog
Like AACOG and you, City Public Service (CPS) cares about our community and the quality of the air we breathe. By buying an electric lawn mower, you can help the environment.  From March 19 to August 31, 2005, you can save up to $80 on your purchase of electric-powered lawn equipment. When you turn in your gasoline-powered lawn equipment to a participating mower drop-off location, you will receive a rebate form from CPS good towards the purchase of qualifying law equipment including mowers, blowers, edgers and trimmers. If you are a first-time buyer and do not have a gas-powered mower to recycle, you can still receive a rebate for up to $40. For more details and a list of qualifying equipment, view the complete Mow Down Smog insert (pdf). You'll need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file.

Senior Day 2005 a Success

Go to webpage

On February 8, 2005, over 1,000 seniors from Bexar County traveled to Austin in 26 buses to participate in Senior Day at the Capitol.  Although the weather was cool and rainy, it did not dampen the enthusiasm for the seniors participating.  Many of the seniors were able to speak with members of the Bexar County delegation and have their pictures taken with House and Senate members.

One senior participant stated:  "Thank you for the opportunity to travel to Austin for Senior Day.  This was my first trip to the State Capitol and I'll never forget the experience."  Senior Day 2005 was a great success!

Latest Housing News - Energy Tip of the Month
(excerpt from the 2005 State of Texas Energy Assistance Calendar)

Go to webpage

Did you know that the appliance you purchase has more than just one "price tag"?   One is the purchase price, and the other is what you'll pay (for the energy) to run it.  While you may have a terrific purchase price, you may end up spending more money than you think.  Over the life of an appliance you normally spend much more to use it than it cost to buy it.

ENERGY STAR® qualified products meet energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.  These products include appliances, ceiling fans, electronic equipment, phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs, computer equipment, and more. An appliance that qualifies for ENERGY STAR meets tough federal criteria for energy efficiency.  To get an idea of just how much you can save, take a look at the EnergyGuide label for a refrigerator.  The label may tell you that the refrigerator uses 618 kWh.  The least efficient refrigerators of the same size and configuration use 1,042 kWh, or almost 70% more.  The refrigerator in this example qualifies for the ENERGY STAR rating and costs $52 a year to operate -- $36 less each year than the least efficient model.  For a complete listing of ENERGY STAR products, go to www.energystar.gov or call toll free at 1-888-782-7937.
