Ozone Season 2007, April 1 through October 31, is our region's final year in a three-year monitoring period that will determine whether the region is in attainment of the federal standard for ground-level ozone.

AACOG developed the Clean Air Gauge to visually display where we stand in meeting these federal standards.  As ozone levels rise this summer, the Clean Air Gauge will indicate how close our region is to violation of federal air quality standards, indicated on the gauge as the RED ZONE.  We invite all businesses and media interested in promoting quality awareness to post this image on their website.  Contact Heather Willden (210-362-5303) for image posting instructions.

Air pollution is particularly harmful to sensitive groups: children, the elderly, people who are active outdoors, and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma. According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, exposure to ground-level ozone can cause coughing, wheezing, nausea, and throat and lung irritation.  The negative impacts of air pollution don't end with human health; dirty skies can also be detrimental to plants and pose other environmental hazards. For more information, contact Brenda Williams at (210) 362-5246 or visit www.cleanairdrive.com.

This year, April 9-13 has been designated as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in the Alamo Area.  The focus of this week is for our citizens to learn about victimization, reflect on the cost of crime to our society, and promote laws, policies, and programs that help victims of crime rebuild their lives.  The week will also focus on the challenges that victims face in seeking help and finding hope in the aftermath of crime and the positive impact that individuals and communities can have by providing services and support to victims and survivors of crime.  The theme for 2007 is “Victims Rights:  Every Victim.  Every Time.”

The District Attorney’s Office coordinates the coalition of 36 agencies who come together to help plan special events to bring awareness of victims’ rights and services to our community.  For event information view the events calendar.  If you have any questions about crime victims’ rights, the services available to victims of crime or National Crime Victims’ Rights’ Week, please call the District Attorney’s Office Victim Assistance Program at (210) 335-2105 or click here.

On April 5, 2007, the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO), in conjunction with the Energy Services Coalition (ESC), will host a series of free workshops on Improving Energy Efficiency for Local Governments and Municipalities.  These workshops are specifically targeted for Executive Directors, Chief Financial Officers, and for hands-on personnel that are charged with the procurement of professional services, and for personnel responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of equipment within the facilities department.  This includes energy managers, facilities and maintenance managers, building managers, and procurement administrators.

These workshops will focus on resources available to local governments and municipalities that can help management implement comprehensive energy efficiency projects within their buildings.  Each workshop will also provide energy efficiency technical training, with particular attention to the Detailed Utility Audit, Energy Service Performance Contracting (ESPC), and the procurement processes for ESPC projects.  Additional topics include case studies of local governments that have implemented comprehensive energy efficiency projects within their buildings and the energy savings that they have already achieved.
Click here to register.   E-Mail Theresa Sifuentes with any questions.

The Alamo and Bexar Area Agencies on Aging are currently developing 2008-2010 Area Plans to address senior issues in the AACOG region.  In order to gain feedback from local communities, we are scheduling public meetings during March and April in each of the 12 counties to develop a senior needs assessment unique to that county.   To find a public meeting in your area, please see the AACOG community calendar of events.

The deadline for nominations for the 2007 AACOG Regional Awards is Tuesday, May 1, 2007.

Categories for nomination are Regional Citizen of the Year, Corporate Citizen of the Year, Community Project of the Year, and Governmental Regional Project of the Year.  Current elected officials and public sector employees are ineligible for nomination, unless directly involved in a governmental regional project.

These nominations are open to the public. For more information, visit www.aacog.com/award or call AACOG Community Relations at (210) 362-5204.
