The Academy Quarterly Newsletter Academy Supervisor Activated for Military Duty Dear Fellow Officers:
I have been activated for military duty with the U.S. Air Force. My last day was July 10, 2008. I will return in January 2009. In my absence other Academy personnel will be able to assist you with any in-service training questions or needs. The following is a list of personnel:
Take care and stay safe. Richard D. Bryan Full-Time Basic Peace Officer Academy Begins The first AACOG full-time Basic Peace Officer Academy in many years began May 27, 2008. As a result of this full-time (8:30 -5:30) training, students will complete the course and become TCLEOSE certified Peace Officers in approximately six months (as opposed to the twelve months part-time academy classes take). There are a total of twenty-eight students in the class; twelve of which are being paid and sponsored by law enforcement agencies in the Alamo Area Region. The following law enforcement agencies have hired and are sponsoring police cadets:
Many thanks to these agencies and their administrators for their willingness to participate in this endeavor. It is participation like this that makes it possible for your regional law enforcement academy to better serve you. The next full-time academy class is scheduled for November 2008. If your agency is interested in how it can hire and sponsor police cadets at no additional cost through the AACOG Academy’s approximate 1000 hour Basic Peace Officer Training, please contact: Mr. Ron Ray, BPOC Academy Supervisor, 210-362-5272 or e-mail: rray@aacog.com.
The above chart is an example of the cost break down for a law enforcement agency with a starting base salary of $30,000 a year for police officers. The new hire’s first year reduced salary (from $30,000 to $27,500) would cover the agency’s cost for sponsoring the new hire through the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy ($1500 tuition + approximately $1,000 for uniforms and ammo). In return, the agency receives a new officer with approximately 1000 hours of academic training and hands on experience (and multiple certifications) before the officer even enters the agency’s Field Training Officer (FTO) Program. AACOG Law Enforcement Job Fair in October

There is no charge for agencies or attendees. This is a free community service provided by AACOG. The next AACOG Academy Job Fair will be held November 25, 2008 (2:00p – 4:00p). Quarterly Quote: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” - John Quincy Adams The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force: Law Enforcement Agencies United With the Same Mission – “Catch the Bad Guys”
Since its inception, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, which covers the Western District of Texas, has been involved in thousands of arrests of wanted fugitives all across the country. Members of the task force include local law enforcement officers who are assigned to work with the U.S. Marshals for the purpose of catching wanted felons. Such an assignment does not require a department to commit an officer to the task force full time. Any department can offer to participate and any department can contact the task force is they would like help in locating a fugitive (even if the fugitive is believed to have fled Texas). For more information about participating in the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force or to take advantage of their services to help find wanted persons in your felony cases (generally murders, sexual assaults, narcotics trafficking, kidnappings, etc.), contact one of the following offices.
The AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy’s Featured Instructor Sergeant Investigator Anita Seamans Anita Seamans has been an instructor with the AACOG Academy since 1990, and has been in law enforcement for well over twenty-five years. With a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Education and currently working on her PhD in Leadership Studies (as she continues to work as a Criminal Investigator and is on staff for a local university), its amazing Anita has the drive and time to share her talents with us! Anita is active with her church; having been on multiple mission outreach teams to South America and Africa. In 2006, Anita was a presenter on Law Enforcement Issues at a roundtable discussion at Oxford University in England. Anita primarily teaches the Academy cadets, Intermediate courses, and numerous Criminal Investigation courses. Here’s what some of the officers in her classes have said:
Thank you for always doing a great job Anita! R.B. Did You Know… If you are a peace officer attending in-service (i.e. continuing education) courses and you have to pay for the courses yourself, you can claim the expense on your taxes? It’s true. Check it out!
Looking For Some Free Training? From time to time, the academy is able to offer free training to peace officers. Check out a list of the most recent free courses. |
