The Academy Quarterly Newsletter The AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy Holds Open House On February 21, 2008, the Academy held an open house to showcase its Basic Peace Officer Academy and In-service Training programs and facilities. Approximately 75 people showed up to participate in the thirty to forty-five minute tours of the Academy’s operations that included classrooms (including a live feed demonstration of the Academy’s Distance Learning Training Room), and a tour of the Academy’s computer testing room and the Academy’s Physical Training (PT) Room. Members from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), Texas Association of Regional Councils (TARC), local law enforcement agencies, and many others started arriving at the Academy at 10:00 a.m. and were provided an all access tour that included catered lunch provided by the Academy. Members of the Academy shared not only the Academy’s accomplishments over the past year, but also its future plans towards more interactive and reality based training for law enforcement officers in Texas.
AACOG Academy Sponsors Distance Learning Training for the Federal Reserve Bank In a continuing effort to build community partnerships, on January 30, 2008, the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy provided itself as a satellite training facility for the local San Antonio office of the Federal Reserve Bank. Employees from the local office of the Federal Reserve Bank attended the Legal block of cadet training for Federal Law Enforcement Officers at AACOG’s Distance Learning Training Room. The class was being presented from the Federal Reserve in St. Louis and Philadelphia (to name a few), and was transmitted on a live feed to satellite locations around the country that included the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy.
A listing of
free courses through the AACOG Academy Distance Learning Program is
available. Full-Time Basic Peace Officer Academy Set to Start in May AACOG will be starting a full-time Basic Peace Officer Academy on May 27, 2008. As a result of this full-time (8:30 -5:30) training, students will complete the course and become TCLEOSE certified Peace Officers in approximately six months (as opposed to the eleven to twelve months part-time academy classes take). Several local law enforcement agencies have already agreed they will hire and sponsor cadets through the full-time academy. Thanks to the assistance of Officer Mike McFerrin with the New Braunfels Police Department, the AACOG Academy is working to provide this full-time academy class to local law enforcement at no extra cost to the agencies other than what it would cost to hire a first year police officer (see chart below). If your agency is interested in how it can hire and sponsor police cadets at no additional cost through the AACOG Academy’s approximate 1000 hour Basic Peace Officer Training, please contact: Mr. Ron Ray, BPOC Academy Supervisor, 210-362-5272 or e-mail: rray@aacog.com.
The above chart is an example of the cost break down for a law enforcement agency with a starting base salary of $30,000 a year for police officers. The new
hire’s first year reduced salary (from $30,000 to $27,500) would cover the
agency’s cost for sponsoring the new hire through the AACOG Regional Law
Enforcement Academy. In return, the agency receives a new officer with
approximately 1000 hours of academic training and hands on experience (and
multiple certifications) before the officer even enters the agency’s Field
Training Officer (FTO) Program.
AACOG Law Enforcement Job Fair in April The Academy will be hosting a peace officer job fair at our offices at 8700 Tesoro Drive, in San Antonio on April 10, 2008 (9:00a – 11:00a). The job fair applicant pool will include cadets from class 2007 A, Class 2007 B, Class 2008 A, and recent graduates from our Texas Supplemental Peace Officer Course. Also, any current peace officers looking for “greener pastures” are encouraged to attend. Any agency recruiters looking for eligible applicants can contact Academy Supervisor Ron Ray at 210-362-5272 or e-mail at rray@aacog.com to reserve their spot. There is no charge for agencies or attendees. This is a free community service provided by AACOG. The next AACOG Academy Job Fair will be held Thursday, October 2, 2008 (0900-1200).
Did You Know… If you are a peace officer attending in-service (i.e. continuing education) courses and you have to pay for the courses yourself, you can claim the expense on your taxes? It’s true. Check it out!
Looking For Some Free Training? From time to time, the academy is able to offer free training to peace officers. Check out a list of the most recent free courses. |
