Commute Solutions for Schools . . . .
  • Improve air quality and health
  • Decrease traffic congestion around schools
  • Increase parking lot safety
  • Save gas money
  • Set an earth-wise example

The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) Commute Solutions Program provides FREE SchoolPool, Walking School Bus, Bike Buddies, and Green Patrol services to schools looking for better ways to help parents and children make the home-to-school commute each day.

The SchoolPool program helps match parents who drive their children to and/or from school and are interested in sharing rides. SchoolPool not only reduces school traffic and air pollution in the vicinity, but it also helps parents save time and money.

Walking School Bus
The Walking School Bus program helps to match parents who live in the same neighborhood and would like to have their children walk to and from school together in a group for added safety. A Walking School Bus consists of approximately five children and a parental chaperone.

Bike Buddies
Bike Buddies is similar to the Walking School Bus program, except that kids bike instead of walk to and from school together. Both programs not only reduce vehicle traffic and air pollution around schools, but also encourage children to adopt healthy exercise habits.

Green Patrol Program
Green Patrol
And finally, the Green Patrol Program focuses on reducing air pollution in the vicinity of the school by enlisting students as partners in asking parents to pledge to turn off their vehicle engines while waiting to pick up kids from school. AACOG provides materials needed for the program (such as pledge cards for parents and vests for “Green Patrol Officers”).

If you feel your school would benefit from any of these programs, please contact us for more information. AACOG staff would be happy to come out and give a presentation on one or all of these programs at a PTA or other meeting!
