The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, formerly known as Section 8, is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families in affording decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit. Acceptable housing units include homes, duplexes, town homes, mobile homes, and apartments.
Eligibility & Process
In order to participate, the landlord must agree to comply with the program, the contract rent must be determined reasonable, and the family’s rent portion must be affordable. In addition, the housing unit must pass a housing quality standards inspection.
Upon completion of the lease-up process, AACOG pays a monthly housing assistance payment (HAP) directly to the landlord, and the tenant pays the difference based on their income. The HAP payments continue as long as the household, the housing unit, and the landlord meet program requirements.
Service Area
AACOG administers the Housing Choice Voucher program in Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina and Wilson counties.
