Objective:
To supervise the delivery of highly effective training to law enforcement officers and cadets.
Organizational Relationships:
1. Supervisor: Criminal Justice Director.
2. Employees Supervised: Adjunct Instructors; supervision of Police Cadets while in training.
3. Other: Has regular contact with department and agency staff; Academy Advisory Committee; law enforcement associations and groups; police and corrections cadets/officers; and elected and public officials.
General Statement of Duties:
This is a responsible, supervisory position. Duties include coordinating and supervising training classes for Basic Correction/Pease Officer Cadet Classes; maintaining training records and related documents; instructing cadets; and facilitating high-liability training, such as firearms, tactical driving, and defensive tactics training.
Examples of Work:
Essential Duties
Coordination and supervision of Basic Corrections/Peace Officer Cadet Classes, including management of class operations, schedules, adjunct instructors, equipment and supplies;
Provides leadership to the Cadet Class, ensuring discipline and the maintenance of a safe and positive learning environment;
Maintains training records, activity logs, and related documents;
Receives and documents tuition payments;
Provides input in the performance evaluation of approximately 30 Adjunct Instructors;
Provides instruction to Corrections/Peace Officer Cadets, as well as in-service training of currently licensed Texas Corrections/Peace Officers;
Provides facilitation and leadership of high-liability training including: firearms, tactical driving, and defensive tactics training;
Performs academy resource management duties, including vehicles, firearms, weapons, and equipment/supplies inventory and maintenance;
Assists in planning and coordinating events, such as Cadet Class Orientation, Cadet Class Graduation, Job Fairs, and Public Information sessions;
Develops and delivers presentations for regional customers, including cadets, students, and public officials; and
Assists in facilitation of self-directed work teams that may be involved in curriculum/evaluation development, instructor development, or the initial design of another predestinated work- product.

Performs such other duties as may be required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of Texas Police or Corrections practices, including Penal Code, Arrest Search and Seizure Law, Code of Criminal Procedures, Traffic Law, Juvenile Law, Drug law, Civil Procedures, Criminal Investigations, and Use of Force Concepts; knowledge of adult learning/training practices; knowledge of classroom management; skills related to Texas Law Enforcement Practices, including proficiency with standard issue police firearms and less lethal weapons (OC Spray. Baton); the ability to develop a TCLEOSE lesson plan and related training presentations; ability to manage the operations of a law enforcement training class; must have positive leadership and communications skills, and creative problem solving skills; ability to work alone or in teams to accomplish the organizational mission.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, education and training, or business or closely related filed;
At least 30 hours of college credit from an accredited Collage in Criminal Justice, Education, or related field, plus five years of law enforcement experience, including three years as a TCLEOSE instructor;
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required:
Valid Texas driver's license or available alternate means of transportation; and Intermediate certification as a peace officer and as an instructor from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
