CARE - Certified Auto Ride in an Emergency

The Certified Auto Ride in an Emergency (CARE) program is a guaranteed ride for carpoolers and bus riders who miss their ride due to a mid-day emergency.

Riding the bus or carpooling is environmentally responsible, as well as convenient and affordable. However, you also need a reliable way to leave work if you can't wait for the bus or your carpool.

For just $5 per year, you can receive FOUR cab rides annually (within the AACOG region) whenever an emergency arises that causes you to miss your carpool or bus.

The CARE Program is a benefit offered by VIA and AACOG. In order to qualify, you must commute to work at least three times per week by carpool or on the VIA bus. Then, all you have to do is complete the registration form (contact Heather Willden at (210) 362-5303 for form), then mail it in with your $5 check made payable to AACOG.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Register for the CARE program by filling out the form and mailing it with your $5 annual payment.

  • Your first ride voucher will be sent to you along with detailed program guidelines.

  • Continue to use your carpool or VIA to get to and from work, knowing that CARE will get you home in an emergency.

  • When an emergency arises and you need to leave work, call a CARE program service partner (taxi service) to get: a taxi ride (up to 30 miles) within the AACOG region.

  • Your waiting time should be less than 20 minutes.

  • Present your driver's license (for identification purposes) and your ride voucher to the taxi driver.

  • Have the voucher completed and signed by the service provider. This is required for validation.

  • When using a taxi service, you will only have to pay for the driver's tip. You must still send in the completed voucher to AACOG.

AACOG and VIA reserve the right to have final approval of all requests for reimbursement.

CARE PROGRAM RULES AND RESTRICTIONS

Each commuter can use up to four taxi rides per contract year. One voucher will be provided upon registration, and additional vouchers will be provide as used vouchers are received by AACOG.

Taxi Guidelines

  • Each taxi trip can be up to 30 miles, one way originating and ending within Bexar County.

  • If the trip exceeds 30 miles, the commuter pays the difference directly to the driver.

  • CARE taxis are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Taxi rides are limited to the following destinations:

  • From the company's work site to the eligible employee's principle place of residence

  • From the company's work site to the eligible employee's personal vehicle (e.g. vehicle located at a Park and Ride lot)

  • Immediate stops in the event of an emergency (i.e. pick up necessary prescription(s) at a pharmacy; pick up sick or injured child at day care or school)
