CUSEC, in partnership with FEMA and the Texas Division of Emergency Management, is hosting an earthquake planning and awareness workshop for the Alamo Area on October 3, 2019. The workshop will provide local government, emergency management, and other community stakeholders such as NGOs and the private sector, with an understanding of earthquakes hazards, associated risks, and planning and mitigation strategies to reduce potential impacts. During the workshop, participants will learn from nationally-recognized earthquake subject matter experts about:
Earthquake activity in Texas and frequency and potential for damaging earthquakes;
How damaging earthquakes may affect critical infrastructure and potential impacts to citizens and government;
Unique challenges emergency management and responders face during earthquake response and recovery (and what to do about it); and
Resources and tools available to support earthquake planning, mitigation, and community resiliency.

In 2018, the Buddy Walk of South Texas had over 4,500 participants take part in our walk – for 2019, we expect even more! This one-mile walk is a family event that celebrates individuals with Down Syndrome while increasing awareness and inclusion. The event will include onsite activities such as music, face painting, inflatables, a train, exhibitor booths, and food trucks.
“The Buddy Walk of South Texas is an event like none other. Come join us as we celebrate Down syndrome and promote inclusion in our community. We truly believe South Texas can be a leader as an inclusive community, and this event provides us the platform we need to share our mission,” said Brooke Kearney, DSASTX Executive Director.
