Participating organizations encouraged their employees to use alternative
modes of transportation -- carpooling, walking, bicycling, or riding the bus --
when commuting to and from work during the month of June. Through their efforts,
the amount of vehicle travel on our roadways during the month was reduced by
more than 200,000 miles. By using alternative commuting options, participants
also reduced the amount of vehicle pollutants released into the air. The
reduction in air pollution is estimated to total more than 750 pounds.
