San Antonio, January 31, 2005 As many as 1,000 seniors from Bexar County will participate in Senior Day at the Capitol in Austin on February 8, 2005.  This group will be largest delegation in Texas attending the event.  There were 4,500 seniors statewide on the Capitol steps in 2003, and many more are expected in 2005.

Seniors will participate in a ceremony on the south steps of the Capitol and have the opportunity to meet with elected officials representing Bexar County to discuss issues affecting older Texans.  This is the third time the Texas Senior Advocacy Coalition has organized Senior Day at the Capitol.  During Senior Day at the Capitol for the 77th and 78th legislative sessions, Bexar County also had the largest delegation of participating seniors.  A press conference on the event will be held by the City/County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs this Tuesday, February 1 at 9:00 a.m. on the steps of City Hall.

The seniors will be transported in more than 25 buses to the event.  They will be departing early from various locations all over San Antonio.  The largest number of buses will depart from Crossroads Mall at 8:00 a.m., but other buses will be departing from City of San Antonio senior nutrition sites.  Reservations for buses departing from Crossroads Mall should be made through Christian Senior Services by calling (210) 735-5115 and reservations for buses departing from City of San Antonio Senior Nutrition sites can be made through the City of San Antonio by calling (210) 207-7172.  There is no charge to seniors.  A sack lunch will be provided by the City of San Antonio, and buses will leave Austin at 1:30 p.m. to return to San Antonio.
